Why You Need A Chicken Coop

If you have made the smart and eco-friendly decision of owning your own chickens, then you must know that you will need to buy or build a coop for them.  A chicken coop is a very vital part of owning your own chickens.  Completeing this task is very important for several reasons.  Listed below, you will find that having a coop for your chickens will be very rewarding in the end.

The first reason for needing a chicken coop would be that they need a safe place to roost at night, free from the harm of any predators that may be lurking.  Having a safe-haven for your chickens ensures that they remain stress-free.  Stress-free chickens tend to provide more and better tasting produce, whether it be their eggs or meat.  If you have a coop with some small logs or round sticks of wood placed a couple of feet off of the ground, the chickens will naturally want to roost there at night.  You should be able to close the coop up at dark, as well, and let them out first thing in the morning.

Also, having a coop gives the chickens a place to lay eggs, so you don't have to search your whole yard for eggs.  You should have an egg box, big enough for a full grown chicken to fit in,  for every two or three hens you own, ensuring that there is always an available box for a hen that is ready to lay.  Even if you decide to have free-range chickens, if you have a place for them to lay in a coop, they are more likely to use it, instead of laying out in the open. The reason for this, is because chickens like to have a small enclosed area to lay their eggs for safe hatching.

Another reason for buying or building your own chicken coop, would be the fact that the coop would provide a place for the chickens to escape the harsh elements of the weather.  Whether it is cold or raining outside, your chickens will need to a place to go to stay cozy, comfortable, warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
